The Emerald Empire is a business dedicated in servicing our clients to the best of our ability and more. Our mission is to provide our clients with any and all enhancement information on our imported Colombian Emeralds. The Emerald’s that we supply are solely mined just outside the capital city Bogota, Colombia, South America.

NOTE: 99.7% of Emerald imported out of Colombia, South America is treated.

Colombian Emerald-Gem Quality. The most widely used treatment to the Colombian Emerald is the pressure process of oiling them. This oil is natural and colorless called “cedarwood oil”. Gemstone cutters have used the enhancement of oiling Emeralds for several hundred years, only the process has changed some due to technology advancement.

The Emerald on a whole is a more fragile gemstone than the diamond for instance. The characteristics or fissures that occur during the Emeralds growth are what weaken the crystal depending on their size and frequency in the stone. At times some of these fissures can reach the surface or table of the Emerald. In these instances a new colorless enhancement called “Gematrat” is being used to treat the Emerald. The Gematrat process has the highest rated stability by AGL [American Geological Laboratories] of any emerald treatment used on the market today. When an Emerald is enhanced with this process it is permanent and is guaranteed for durability for the life of the stone. This enhancement at present is only being used in Colombia, South America and New York, New York.

Special Care is a must when owning a Fine Emerald piece
  • Be very careful not to expose the emerald to high heat [steam cleaning is not acceptable].
  • Clean your emerald jewelry in warm, mild soapy water. Do not soak the emerald and be sure to use a very soft old toothbrush to gently clean the jewelry piece.
  • There may be a point eventually when the Emerald would need to be re-oiled. The best option is to take the gemstone to a gemologist and have he/she examine it for you.
  • Lastly, enjoy your most prized gemstone! A few extra steps will ensure a long relationship with your Emerald and an heirloom to future generations.
