IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

Emerald Specimen
  • Is the Jeweler noted for his/her integrity and client trust?

A reputable Jeweler is worth the time and effort in checking into. Dealing with a trustworthy jeweler will benefit you, your family, and friends for many years to come. Ask lots of questions, they will be happy to increase your knowledge of the world of gemstones.

  • Is my EMERALD treated or untreated?

stone cutter wheel For the most part all Emerald is treated and this is to enhance the appearance of a stone. The inclusions often reach the surface of the Emerald and the cutters use enhancements to benefit the buyer, these are used after they have finished cutting them. Emeralds are very porous, just like opals and pearls. Sometimes they need to be sealed with a clear resin to protect the stone. If the Emerald is treated with a colored resin or colored oil this is not acceptable and deceptive because it gives it a false color. The enhancement most often used in Colombia is cedarwood oil. Because this enhancement is not permanent and the oil leaks out over time, the oiling process should be repeated every few years to ensure the beauty and value of the stone. Ocassionally the enhancement of an epoxy resin "palm oil" in liquid form has been used. This treatment is very rarely used. These enhancements have been accepted and widely used for several hundreds of years. Read our Enhancement Disclosure.

See our Gemstone Identification page

Do I need an appraisal?

Yes and No. Appraisals vary and their are no absolutes. A GIA (Gemology Institute of America) graduate is a good choice to do the appraisal. The appraisal form should contain all of the specifications necessary to describe adequately the stone. Documentation is good insurance on your part and a color photo would be an extra cushion for any type of replacement due to loss.

Where is my EMERALD from?
